Food Pyramid Swapped for Dinner Plate

As stated in the readings this past week, poor nutritional habits are common among young teenagers. I found the food pyramid (especially the most recent 2005 version) to be confusing and very difficult to teach. I am hopeful that the new food plate will help teachers and parents to better explain and encourage young adolescents to engage in healthier eating habits at meal times.

  1. I agree, Karen - it seems like the Food Plate model is much more intuitive. I suppose time will tell, but showing how nutrition should break down within a single meal, as opposed to over a typical day, seems much more concrete and accessible - should be much easier for students at the middle level (and the rest of us, too!).
